Goku suffers heart disease complications while battling against Android 19, which render him incapable of continuing. After taking special pills that Trunks had brought to him from the future, Goku finds himself completely cured. Later the fateful Cell Game takes place, but Goku suddenly accepts defeat and afterwards warps himself to Planet Kaio, taking the exploding Cell with him.

After intensive training with Goku in the Room of Spirit and Time located inside Kami's temple, Gohan is now capable of being a Super Saiyan at any time. Cell's barbaric manner at the Cell Game evokes Gohan's anger and his innermost power comes alive. His latent strength is so powerful that it even overwhelms Cell.

Krillin falls in love with Android 18 even though she's an enemy. After Cell is completely defeated, he asks Shenron to remove the bombs inside Android 17 and 18.

Piccolo decides to merge with Kami-sama after seeing that he was unable to defeat the Androids on his own. He tries to stop Cell from absorbing Android 17, but even his new power fails against Cell.

Vegeta was angered during his training, realizing that Goku's strength surpassed his own. But the anger awakened his power as a Super Saiyan, letting him regain his confidence. Though the Room of Spirit and Time strengthens his son Trunks and himself, Perfect Cell was even more than they could handle.

Vegeta and Bulma's son. He travels in a time machine from the future to the present, to give Goku pills which will save Goku's life. Doing so will keep Trunks' tragic future from occurring. Trunks inherits a power that surpasses that of his father, with which he defeats Frieza and his father, King Cold, in a single blow.
